This output was disseminated as a result of a TSB and EPSRC co-funded project “Biobased lightweight sandwich structures for packaging applications” (DT/F006101/1). The project was conducted in collaboration with 10 industrial partners. It provided comprehensive characterisation of cell structure, mechanical and thermal properties of starch foams and composites, design of thermal packaging solutions, modelling and experimental assessment of thermal insulation performance. It demonstrated that biofoam can outerperform plastic foams as thermal barriers and led to a further investigation “Design of reusable biomaterial packaging systems for the chilled meat and fish industry”, funded by TSB (Grant 131380).
