Additional information

Currently, Mg-alloys cannot be directly recycled in house due to the existence of a significant amount of oxide films and other inclusions. In this paper we have demonstrated a physical approach to direct recycling of Mg-alloys without the involvement of any chemical treatment. We found that intensive melt shearing can disperse the oxide films into nano-scale particles, which are not only no longer harmful to mechanical performance but also provide effective substrates for grain refinement. This discovery has led to a new patent for melt treatment: UK patent Application No. 1015498.7. Priority date: 15/09/2010.
