This research introduced a novel boundary characteristic description, termed a ‘centroid distance diagram (CDD)’. A sister paper entitled ‘A new image acquisition system building 3D model of skin and its applications’ was Winner of Skin Forum Award at the 3rd Symposium of Skin and Formulation & 10th Annual III Meeting of the Skin Forum. This journal paper formalised and extended the work presented in the earlier conference paper. Funding via the South West Regional Development Agency under the Knowledge Exploitation South West followed.
