Questioning Credible Commitment: Perspectives on the Rise of Financial Capitalism
In this book, a specially commissioned group of historians and economists examine and challenge the North and Weingast thesis to show that multiple commitment mechanisms were necessary to convince public creditors that sovereign debt. It was based on a conference I organised in March 2010. My contribution includes selection of the essays for inclusion, co-writing the introduction with Larry Neal (pp. 1-20), and single authorship of one of the substantive chapters (pp. 76-103). I also performed editorial work on the other chapters and secured the contract from CUP despite their initial resistance to doing 'conference volumes.'
