Venting of gas explosion through relief ducts: Interaction between internal and external explosions
To facilitate explosion venting to a safe location it is sometimes necessary to install a vent duct and this can lead to a strong increase in overpressure. In this work involving three European institutions, testing at small scale was carried out in the explosion laboratory at Leeds. It lead to some insights in the dynamics of the explosion development in such configurations and the understanding of the effect of variables such ignition position and mixture reactivity and therefore guidance for safer design. The work and experience was later used by the Italian researchers in modelling these phenomena using CFD.
