This paper provides the first, and only, classification of collections of sets that can be visualized using Euler diagrams drawn with circles. A key contribution is the derivation of an inductive, circles-based drawing algorithm, extending [Stapleton1]. Since publication, significance has been demonstrated further by empirical studies confirming that circles are a cognitively effective shape typically preferred by users. This paper formed a key output from the EPSRC project EP/E011160. ISI Web of Knowledge ranked TVCG 13th out of 105 computer science/software engineering journals in 2012 and is A rated in the Australian ERA/CORE list.
