Analysis of Semipermeable Containment Sleeve Technology for High-Speed Permanent Magnet Machines
For reasons of weight reduction and efficiency there is increased interest in high-speed electrical machines (e.g. for machine tools, aircraft). High-speed operation requires structural sleeve to contain centrifugal forces but this compromises magnetic performance of machine. Paper presents, for first time, benefits of employing cold-rolled steels that exhibit low values of magnetic permeability for rotor containment in high-speed permanent-magnet machines. It shows that 20% improvement in magnetic loading and associated specific output is possible.
