Double-weighted statement

McCleave's interdisciplinary study, Dance in Handel's London Operas, represents over two decades of research. It is the first monograph to survey the theatrical dance practice of a major European centre during the baroque period. It is also unique in identifying and measuring the influence of some 70 years of diverse national theatrical practices (English, French, German, Italian) on a canonic composer of that era. Contrary to received opinion, neither London nor Handel was on the periphery of operatic change and reform, rather they led it.
