<17> This research builds on a longstanding programme of collaboration between Levene and Bar-Ilan on non-parametric methods for comparing rankings, be they of ranked search engines results, of rankings induced by citation databases, or in this case of published university rankings. A novel rank correlation metric defined by Bar-Ilan and Levene and utilised in the paper is the M measure, which puts higher weight on comparable items at higher ranks.
