Significance of output:

Medal-winning invention of world’s first sonar that works in bubbly water (e.g. ship wakes or the Gulf). Technology since been investigated by industry for sonar and IED detection (http://dx.doi.org/10.1098/rspa.2013.0512). According to Dr Trivedi, BAE Systems (Maneeshi.Trivedi@baesystems.com) “Following publication of the world’s only sonar which can work in bubbly waters …this is a top priority for BAE Systems Maritime Services.” Media impact: http://www.southampton.ac.uk/engineering/research/projects/do_dolphins_think_nonlinearly.page? . Also contains hypothesis of what this suggests about dolphin signal processing (doi:10.1098/rspa.2012.0247), produced ideas on humpback whale feedings which then featured in TV documentaries for BBC (narrated by Sir David Attenborough) and National Geographic channel (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/engineering/research/projects/whales_hunt_with_wall_of_sound.page?).
