This book is derived from a conference, Multilingualism from Alexander to Charlemagne: cross-cultural themes and perspectives, held in Cambridge in May 2009. Mullen and her co-editor subsequently commissoned a series of chapters from the conference participants, developing and expanding several themes which they deemed significant for progress in the field. They shared the editing and proof-reading of the contributions. Mullen single-wrote the Introduction.
