Double-weighted statement

This book is the product of ten years' research and writing. It was offered to CUP in 2000, contracted in 2001, and published in 2011. The volume of research published internationally during that period in the fast-moving field of the Greek novel meant that the final book was very different to the one originally envisaged. The ideas were trialled in a large number of speaking arenas across the world (as the acknowledgements in the preface testify), and there were numerous spin-off articles too. This book, however, represents the summation of Whitmarsh's thoughts on the topic.
