Significance of output:

This reports on the first successful vapor-liquid-solid growth of high-density and orientation-controlled germanium nanowires (GeNWs) on the Si(100) substrate. Control of growth is vital to the transport properties of electrons and holes and represents a major advance in enabling technologies for high-density GeNW based switching transistors and non-volatile memories, which are one of the most promising post-CMOS technologies in the latest semiconductor roadmap.
