<06> This is the first work to transfer the biological concept of cellular signalling cascades to wireless sensor networks, introducing a Rule-based Sensor Network (RSN) that relies exclusively on local rule evaluation to generate the overall emergent behaviour. Extensive simulations and a lab implementation compare RSN with traditional networking approaches and show that RSN exhibits much higher scalability in handling typical application scenarios at the cost of somewhat reduced reliability. Recent surveys discussing the future of bio-inspired networking cite our work, indicating its importance in the research community. Dietrich contributed the simulation study, approximately one third of the total effort.
