Additional information

<26> In volume rendering, most existing optical models are particle-based and unable to characterize the collective optical effect of a particle set properly. In this article, we propose a generalized optical model that mixes particle element and surface element together to characterize both the behaviour of individual particle and the collective effect of particles. The new optical model is not only theoretically more rational and solid than the particle-only model but it also allows the combining of material properties and so produce a much more appropriate volume rendering. Li’s contributions are mainly with theoretical modelling of the proposed technique.
