Marc DANEL is included in this submission as the leader and representative of the QUATUOR DANEL. The other three players in the quartet, however, namely Gilles MILLET, Vlad BOGDANA and Guy DANEL, should be regarded as having made an equal contribution to the research of the Department. As in RAE2008 their contract falls within Category C: the four members of Quatuor Danel are employed by the quartet to undertake research in the form of performance. They were appointed as our string-quartet-in-residence in 2005 and are recorded on the University HR system as Honorary Research Fellows with 0 FTE. The University of Manchester is their only U.K. base, although they also have a continental base in Brussels. During the preceding 5 years, 2005-12, they have given regular recitals in our Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall – about a dozen a year – plus a regular series of workshops and seminars as part of our weekly research afternoons. They have given numerous U.K. premieres at this university in recent seasons, including several quartets by Weinberg that link with the research of David FANNING. They have also collaborated with composers here – both staff and research students – in giving premieres of their works or rehearsing them in workshops.
