Additional information

This paper contributes to the scholarly research on structured talk strategies in the primary classroom - known as ‘ground rules for talk’ (Mercer 2000). Its significance and international reach are shown through citations by Mercer, Simpson and Majors (2010) as being exemplary of an argument which critiques their position. It also develops a fuller conceptual framework for research on this topic, embedding the significance of cultures, social class and power.
