This paper is a comprehensive design procedure for ring lasers, and a culmination of work into the realisation of micro-scale, bistable lasers for all-optical digital logic, optical memories and pulse reshaping applications. It generated an invited paper at the European Semiconductor Laser Workshop (Bristol, 2013) and an invited book chapter in "Compact semiconductor lasers," (In press, Eds. DeLaRue and Chan, Wiley.)
