Additional information

This paper presents a novel application of superconducting fault-current limiters (SFCLs), building on the authors’ publications in this area [10.1049/iet-est.2010.0053, 10.1109/TASC.2011.2129518, 10.1109/TASC.2012.2187291]. It demonstrates opportunities for faster fault clearance and a novel solution to high fault levels, particularly relevant in power-dense environments such as marine applications. The importance of SFCL technology is evidenced by the Energy Technology Institute’s £8M investment in device trials in the UK (C Booth is a member of the ETI strategic advisory group for this area). The concept is being advanced within the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre, which attracts £300k per annum in funding [Chris.Bright@Rolls-Royce.com].
