Additional information

Low-power, intelligent wireless sensors for monitoring the insulation of high-voltage systems will be a key underpinning technology within future smart grids. This paper describes novel diagnostic methods for frequency-based partial discharge (PD) diagnosis that utilise spectral characteristics in a computationally efficient manner to reduce power consumption to a level that could be sustained using energy harvesting as a power source. Knowledge gained is being applied within the research project, ‘Wireless condition monitoring sensors with integrated diagnostics’, funded by National Grid [£125k, 2011-2014, Ian.Kerr@nationalgrid.com], that aims to demonstrate an autonomous sensor node with on-board PD diagnosis capability.
