Additional information

This paper proposes a loop-analysis based method to minimize the whole day energy loss through on-line capacitor adjustment whilst maintaining acceptable voltage levels in electrical distribution networks, especially those with embedded generation. In this way it maintains the correct power quality with minimum power loss. The paper results from a joint research project with Prof Zhang [zhangbm@mail.tsinghua.edu.cn] at Tsinghua University, China, which is partly funded by the National Science Foundation of China [Ref.50823001, £159k, 2008-2012]. The method is undergoing practical implementation by the Beijing Qingda System Control Company  [www.qingstar.com], a spin-out from Tsinghua University.
