Additional information

Interdisciplinary paper describing an entirely new approach to the design of the device microstructure for the enhancement of operational bandwidth of piezoelectric composite transducers. Previous research has been empirical experimental studies employing a limited range of length scales or highly randomised structures – the fractal approach allows the rapid analysis, facilitating the experimental realisation of devices. This proof of concept has wide application in ultrasonic imaging, shaped a successful EPSRC Platform grant award [EP/F017421/1, 2008-12, £950k] and led the group in new directions regarding such deterministic designs in devices and arrays [L-Scott Smith, GE Global Research, smithls@crd.ge.com].
