MR imaging of thrombi using EP-2104R, a fibrin-specific contrast agent: : initial results in patients
This is the first in-man trial demonstrating the potential of a novel fibrin-specific MR contrast agent for the non-invasive and selective visualisation of thrombus in patients with carotid/aortic plaque, deep venous thrombosis and atrial and ventricular clots. It built on many preclinical studies by our group that have demonstrated the potential for thrombus detection using this agent and characterization in animal models of plaque rupture, coronary thrombus, pulmonary embolism and deep venous thrombosis [Botnar, Circulation, 2004a & 2004b, Spuentrup, Circulation, 2005a & 2005b]. René Botnar was the Principal Investigator for the pre-clinical studies and this first in-man trial.
