Additional information

This paper provided the first long term-follow up evidence that a novel method of restoring sinus rhythm in persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) by catheter ablation alone without resort to antiarrhythmic medication or DC cardioversion is effective in a large population. We have followed up this work with (i) published studies addressing the structural and functional consequences of this ablation strategy and (ii) grants obtained in collaboration with experts in imaging, biophysical modelling and cardiac electrophysiology. The paper is cited in the international guideline statement on catheter ablation of AF.
