Magnetic Resonance-Guided Cardiac Interventions Using Magnetic Resonance-Compatible Devices A Preclinical Study and First-in-Man Congenital Interventions
We had previously carried out the first clinical diagnostic cardiac catheterisations under MRI guidance. However, interventional cardiac catheterisation procedures under MRI guidance have not been possible in patients because of the lack of a safe MRI compatible guide-wire. In this study we used a novel fibre-glass guide-wire to carry out animal validation and following a successful investigator led MHRA application, the first human MRI guided interventional procedures. This is the first demonstration that cardiovascular can be carried out completely under MR guidance with elimination of x-ray radiation and improved visualisation of relevant structures.
