Hardness determination of bio-ceramics using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy
This work, sponsored by the Medical Research Council, involved Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), Health and Bio-ceramics research and was directed towards the analysis of bone using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy. Results revealed that LIBS could be used to obtain accurate hardness measurements. The use of a simple laser ablation process to obtain hardness measurements on in-situ bone will have major benefits to the health service. This is the first publication that reports this measurement technique and it is planned to extend this work to develop a simple standard hardness test for all materials.
