Introduction to Part One: The late nineteenth century interior (1870-1900)
This introductory chapter was commissioned by the editors for a publication that emanates from the Modern Interiors Research Centre and includes papers originally presented at MIRC conferences. The chapter provides an overview of the development of academic writing on late nineteenth century interior design and decoration; it also provides an introduction to the three essays in this part of the book. The book and my chapter have been reviewed favourably in several academic journals including The Journal of Design History;(Clive Edwards, December 2009, Vol. 22 Issue 4, p431); The Design Journal (Grace Lees-Maffei, Design Journal 13, 3, p. 373-378); The Journal of William Morris Studies, (Diana Andrews Vol. XXIII, No.3 summer 2011, p.84-88) and by Paul Ranogajec, City University of New York available online at http://southwestjournalofculturesmaterial.blogspot.co.uk/2010/07/designing-modern-interior-from.html
