Additional information

This work questions the validity of a whole line of active research concerning ocean acidification. It shows that it is not the bulk water pH that is critical to plankton, but the pH surrounding them, which they themselves affect through their own metabolism. The work shows that this event will vary with organism size and activity, and thus differential impacts of OA are to be expected affecting succession. The author wrote the grant supporting this work, developed the concepts, developed model code, ran and analysed the outputs and was the major contributor to the publication.
