Additional information

This paper describes a new technique to produce an improved, stable form of artemisinin, a globally important drug used in the treatment of malaria. This work reported continuous polymorphic transformation of artemisinin for the first time, using a solvent-free extrusion based process. Solvent based processes are unable to create a stable form of the desired polymorph. A patent application, with Kelly as co-inventor, on this technology (PCT/GB2013/051248) demonstrates the commercial potential of this technique, which has also been proven with other drugs.
