Wheel surface damage: relating the position and angle of forces to the observed damage patterns
This paper identifies a new method for presenting wheel/rail contact forces produced from vehicle dynamics simulations and relating these forces to the observed wheel damage. The paper includes a detailed description of the field observations and compares the observed damage types, and location of the damage, with the predicted wheel/rail contact parameters and forces. This research work has provided further understanding of the relationship between the direction and magnitude of the wheel/rail contact forces and the resulting damage rates in railway wheels. This information has been used to develop further the engineering models used to predict wheel damage.
