This paper has resulted from research carried out at Huddersfield and Tsinghua University, Beijing. The work investigated he basis for the development of mechanisms to describe cement mantle breakdown in total hip replacements and relates this to cement type and cement stem contact conditions. A detailed understanding of the mechanism of wear and consequential loosening of metal implants is of vital importance to this industry and the patients it serves. Recent citations of the paper demonstrate the continued relevance of this research across the world the associated PhD received an excellence award in China in 2011.
