Additional information

This was a specially commissioned adaptation of the novel by Charles Maturin, often cited as the first Gothic Horror novel. The initial research period involved dramaturgically reworking the sprawling novel into a structure appropriate for the stage. The second phase involved collaboration with John Wright, mask expert and director (founder of Trestle and Told By An Idiot theatre companies). The introduction of the half-mask chorus meant adapting the script in order to allow the chorus to improvise and perform lazzi around the central plotline.
