Author contribution:

Bending is the sole editor of volume 4 of this 6 volume set, with general criteria being established by the series editors. Bending contributed a 12000-word chapter including: the current state of Enlightenment garden history; ways forward; and an indicative case study. He commissioned and edited 8 substantial essays from specialists across different fields and continents. The volume combines an authoritative overview of Enlightenment gardens as physical, social, and artistic spaces with case studies based on new research in varied fields including aesthetics, art history, and contemporary cultural analysis.
