English abstract

This article explores the plans of Stephen Jay Gould, the renowned paleontologist and popular exponent of evolution, to develop and star in a one-man show portraying Darwin. The show never happened, but the plans for it can be found in unpublished correspondence between Gould and the theatre director Luca Ronconi and public engagement of science organizer Pino Donghi. The article reveals Ronconi and Donghi's explanations of what kind of performance they envisioned from Gould; most importantly, this allows us to speculate upon what new directions this nascent collaboration was likely to take the now well-established genre of the "science play".
