In this paper the plane strain Discontinuity Layout Optimization (DLO) procedure is completely reformulated to enable 3D problems to be analysed, significantly extending its scope. The DLO procedure is now widely used in industry (exploited by spinout company LimitState Ltd, www.limitstate.com), and the new advance lays the foundations for a powerful 3D limit load analysis capability to be provided in the future.
