The book draws on an AHRC project of which Campbell was PI, and derives its structure (comprising biography, practice history, historical essays, and list of works) partly from this. Campbell was lead editor (of 3). She determined the structure, chose the authors, and was sole author of the 'Introduction', pp. 7-8; Chapter 5, 'Coventry Cathedral' pp. 72-103; Chapter 8, 'Spence at Cambridge', pp. 1128-137; Chapter 10, 'Towards a new university…' , pp. 152-171; and of 80 out of the 376 entries in the List of Works, pp. 282-365. Campbell wrote approximately one quarter of the text and one quarter of the List of Works.
