This paper introduced a new type of "model-to-image" registration algorithm which allows in vivo registration of intra-operative ultrasound with pre-operative MR images. Registration of these two modalities is notoriously difficult, and this work not only facilitates this but allows it to be done in real-time in the operating theatre. The latter point is crucial for promoting clinical translation of the technology, where it has the potential to greatly improve guidance of minimally invasive procedures. The work was also presented at MICCAI (top-ranked conference in field) in 2008, where the lead author received the Young Scientist Award.
