Additional information

This is the first piece of work to prototype an ultrasonic reflected based method where contact size, shape and pressure distribution have been determined experimentally. The contact patch between a wheel and railway track is small, under high pressure and constantly difficult to measure, however this work overcomes that issue by using an ultrasonic array to focus and integrate the interface non-invasively. Critically, the novel approach means that this method could potentially be used on live rail. Currently the technology is being installed on a railway roller test apparatus at Voestalpine (contact details available).
