Additional information

Use of composite materials in aerospace structures brings the significant problem of impact damage. Runway debris impact, bird strike or tool drop can induce invisible/barely visible damage that seriously affects structural health. Until now, it has only been possible to discern if damage has been caused if the impact force history is available; this will never be the case in operation. This paper provides a methodology that allows impacts to be classified as damaging or not using only response data. This led to an invitation to submit for an EPSRC feasibility study on composite monitoring, which was successful (EP/1033513/1, R/136617).
