Additional information

This paper, presenting the first detailed study using neutron diffraction (ND) for through-thickness strain-texturing in hydroxyapatite coatings, and part of the knowledge-base underpinning patent applications (PCT/GB2010/001073, PE951918US), led to the spin-off RRG Coatings, now Taragenyx Ltd-SC383232(https://www.duedil.com/company/SC383232/taragenyx-limited). Scottish Enterprise funding (£112k) was recently awarded for further development work (SMART/11/044/11/9130). The ND work originating in this paper funded by STFC/ISIS was included as research-highlight in their 2010 Annual Report (http://www.isis.stfc.ac.uk/science/materials-engineering/how-neutrons-can-improve-orthopaedic-implants11375.html) and as part of their Innovation Magazine in 2011 (http://www.isis.stfc.ac.uk/about-isis/isis-impact/case-study-extending-the-life-of-hip-implants11798.html). The paper was also included as an experiment-highlight by ISIS in a recent article celebrating 10 years of engineering (NOTIZIARIO Neutronie-Luce-di-Sincrotrone-Issue18n.1,2013;ISSN 1592-7822)(https://www.fisica.uniroma2.it/~notiziario/2013/18_1_13/NN_Vol18_n1.pdf).
