Additional information

A simple optical technique for high resolution imaging in real time and 3D for biological microscopy. Simultaneous, multiplane images generated from variety of biological samples. Technique uniquely does not rely on scanning methods to generate images so will impact in research where fast events are to be tracked in 3D. Has potential to lead to less expensive instruments for 3D microscopy. An image sharpness technique for inferring the z-position of a single nano-particle is presented that could lead the way to changing how tracking measurements are made. Work has stimulated international interest in faster, ultrasensitive microscopy (USA DOI.org/10.1364/AO.50.004989; Singapore DOI:10.1117/1.3626211).
