Additional information

Many accidents in the chemical industry involve both endothermic as well as exothermic reactions using the same initial reactant. Safety boundaries are very difficult to predict when one does not know beforehand how much of the chemistry will go down each of the exo and endo pathways. Yet safety demands precise predictive information essential concerning when a reactor could go unstable with dangerous chemicals. This paper uses a new Evans function method which transforms the stability problem into new coordinates and enables accurate critical stability path following and prediction of counter-intuitive instabilities. Other groups are already taking this approach further.
