Significance of output:

A mathematical model capable of representing the biodynamic responses of the seated human body is indispensable when optimising vehicle seat and chassis dynamics so as to minimise the vibration transmitted to drivers and passengers. However, there are no known models that take into account either the cross-axis components or the interactions with backrests that have been demonstrated in experimental data. The model developed in this study fills this gap with a seven degree-of-freedom multi-body dynamic model of the seated body with backrest contact. The model was optimised to represent the measured vertical apparent mass and the fore-and-aft cross-axis apparent mass measured on the seat and backrest. It has been used in optimal design of cab-seat-driver dynamic system for excavator and motor grader by construction machinery manufacturers.
