Significance of output:

To use the simplest form of the Finite Element Method (i.e. where only the displacement field is discretised) for the solution of boundary value problems of Gradient Elasticity or Gradient Plasticity, which are advanced theories for modelling continua with microstructure, continuous-strain (C1) interpolation is required. However no appropriate elements exist for three-dimensional problems. This paper presents the first three-dimensional continuous-strain finite element ever constructed, proving the viability of the approach, arguing its superiority and opening the way for the further development of this field.
