Absolute thresholds for the perception of fore-and-aft, lateral and vertical vibration at the hand, the seat and the foot
Significance of output:
This is the first paper to provide absolute thresholds for the perception of vibration in each of three orthogonal axes at the hand, the foot, and the seat over a wide range of frequencies (from 2 to 400 Hz). Much effort is made to reduce vibration in transport to below the level of perception by drivers and passengers (i.e. below absolute thresholds), but reliable thresholds were not previously available. The practical applications of the findings also include the identification of vibration sources that can be perceived by drivers and passengers in transport, providing guidance on perception of building vibration, and identifying tactile channels or sensory system that are responsible for detection of vibration at different frequencies.
