An exact method of regularity analysis for auditory brainstem neurons
Significance of output:
Improved understanding of how the brain processes sound is a fundamental goal of auditory neuroscience. Regularity analysis is a widespread procedure in the study of auditory brainstem neurons and has been embedded in standard schemes for classifying neurons. This paper shows that the accepted method for performing this analysis suffers from bias and noise, and provides an alternative method that is simpler to compute, bias-free and markedly cleaner. As a result, far more can be discerned about the regularity of particular neuron spiketrains, enabling a far more detailed examination of the variety of their responses than had been previously possible.
