Significance of output:

Low frequency noise transmission through windows and windscreens is important in cars, trains and aircraft, but difficult to control by conventional methods. Current piezoelectric actuators would have to be places near the centre of a window to achieve active control, which will clearly interfere with visibility. This paper describes a novel arrangement of wedge shaped actuators that only need to be attached to the edges of the window and yet can provide effective active damping. Of particular interest is the optimisation of the shape of these actuators and the experimental verification of their use.
