Significance of output:

Any joint severely affects the damping properties of the whole structure and these properties are generally assumed to be linear. This paper focuses on aircraft materials and experimentally studies the damping decay in detail for different joints to see how accurate this assumption is. Improvements in our understanding of damping will ultimately produce more effective and efficient structures not just for aircraft applications but for satellites, launchers, ships, vehicles etc. This work was funded by EPSRC (GR/S66718/01).
