Significance of output:

This research was funded by the 4.7MEuro EC project TURNEX (Turbomachinery Noise Radiation through the Engine Exhaust). The article describes a new mathematical formulation of spectral broadening in aeroacoustics. Spectral broadening occurs with aero-engine turbine tones and measurements in open-jet wind tunnels. The effect of haystacking alters the true level of the tones when testing advanced open-rotor aero-engines, which require hugely expensive facilities such as the DNW wind tunnel. The theory in this article provides the most complete theoretical model currently available to predict spectral broadening in aeroacoustics thereby allowing the severity of the effect to be quantified.
