Significance of output:

Tones are an important element affecting calculations of the effective perceived noise level (EPNL) which is a measure of aircraft noise. This paper presents mathematical theory to predict how turbine tones radiated from a turbofan engine are scattered by the turbulent jet exhaust, thus affecting the perceived tone levels. This research was funded by the 4.7MEuro EC project TURNEX (Turbomachinery Noise Radiation through the Engine Exhaust). TURNEX is one of over twenty-five European funded projects linked to aircraft noise and organised in the last decade under the auspices of the X-Noise aviation noise network - see http://www.xnoise.eu/
